Hermann Gretsch is one of the greatest designers of the 20th Century. Theodor Heuss, himself a member of the Deutscher Werkbund from 1913 and its Managing Director for several years, described the Augsburg architect as follows: »Gretsch is neither a puritan nor an ascetic, he is familiar with adornment, playfulness and exuberance, but focuses his attention on the constant, the enduring fundamental shape, that does not confuse daily life with pathos, eternal ceremony or decorative restlessness«.
